  For birders, the woods are home to warblers, woodpeckers, hawks, wrens, and other songbirds. Wood ducks inhabit the deeper swales and herons, egrets, geese, ducks, swans, and rails may be found in the marsh.  Gray fox, white-tailed deer, river otter, reptiles, and amphibians make the Woods their home.  Rare plants include southern twayblade, wooly beach heather, and hop hornbeam, which is only found in Kitty Hawk and Nags Head Woods.

  The Woods provide fantastic natural protection from the elements from having adapted over hundreds of years to the coastal climate.  Salt-tolerant trees and shrubs such as red cedar, live oak, and wax myrtle, grow first and create a protective buffer from the harsh salt sprays, allowing species with less salt tolerance to establish themselves.  Tall hardwoods and pines tower in the interior and a variety of sub-canopy trees and shrubs, as well as vines and herbaceous plants, thrive in the protected environment.
